Twenty-six seconds. That’s all it takes for the ingredients in a cosmetics, skin care or hair care products to hit your blood stream. Your skin has over two million pores in it. It doesn’t filter things out the way your digestive system does. It will absorb 60% to 70% of the ingredients you put on it
Now here’s the real problem. The EU, Canada, and Japan ban a combined 1,440 skincare, cosmetics, and hair care ingredients while the U.S. bans only 8 and restricts 3 because the FDA has not been given legal authority to ban more. In fact the last law governing this area was written in 1938.
The products you’re using to fight acne, irritation, dry skin, dullness or other skin concerns, may actually be causing those very problems. Combinations of ingredients can also be taking an unseen, and creeping toll on your long-term physical and mental health.
But don’t worry. What you’re about to read will arm you with the knowledge of how to choose and use the safest and most effective beauty and personal care products for your daily routine.
Ingredients hidden by not commonly known names are in all kinds of beauty products, including the expensive brands. Even brands labeled “natural”, “nontoxic”, or “earth friendly“ can be unsafe and include ingredients like lead, mercury, formaldehyde, and many other harmful ingredients that are legally considered “natural” and can be hidden from you by using one of dozens of alternate names.
Several major retailers have labeled some of the products they sell as “Green”, or “Safe”, but upon investigation we found that means those products exclude only less than 100 of the over 1,400 ingredients banned in other parts of the world. Not much of a solution for this important health safety problem.
We asked, a spokesperson for Achieve Beauty, to give us an example of how some brands hide dangerous ingredients.
“We have a comprehensive ingredient analysis service available online that translates every ingredient on a label into its commonly known name and provides you with the name of countries where that ingredient is banned or restricted, along with potential skin, hair or health problems it can cause.
This is so important, since even smart consumers don’t know all the different names for each ingredient, and most people are surprised to find out what’s in their products. Arsenic, for example, is labeled under several different names including Atomic Number 33, Fowler's Solution, Numéro Atomique 33, Solution de Fowler, and many others.”
She continued:
“We consulted with a person allergic to nickel. Her dermatologist gave her the name of 13 not commonly known names for nickel and told her to read the labels and avoid any of them. We analyzed products she was using and found that one of the products contained one of the 23 alternate names for nickel (10 more names than her dermatologist gave her), and that ingredient was likely contributing to the breakouts she was experiencing.”
Combinations of safe ingredients in the same routine, even if in different products, can be taking an unseen, and creeping toll on your long-term physical and mental health. For example, Vitamin C is considered a health safe ingredient. Sodium benzoate is also considered safe. When these two ingredients are used during the same routine, they become a cancer-causing compound called benzene.
Ever wondered how one of your skin or hair care products works at first, and then stops working for what seems to be no reason at all? The answer might have nothing to do with the product itself or its ingredients
The skin care specialists at Achieve Beauty tell us that certain ingredients in one product can cause another product’s ingredients not to work. For example, Retinol is an often used ingredient to treat acne, and vitamin C is often used to address pre-mature aging. Here’s the problem. If you add a Retinol product during the same routine where you are using vitamin C, they render one another ineffective.
At the same time, combinations of products with conflicting ingredients can cause dry skin, acne, dullness, wrinkles, and other problems. In other words, your combination of skin care products could be creating the very problems you’re trying to solve. Why else would a product work splendidly for a few weeks, only to stop working?
Think about how many complex chemicals are hiding in the handful of skin care, cosmetics and hair care products you use every day.
In the United States alone there are over 12,000 unique chemical ingredients being used in the manufacture of personal care products. A typical product will contain from 15–30 ingredients and the average woman uses between 8 and 15 beauty care products a day.
Even if you knew the name of every potentially harmful ingredient, or the dozens of alternate names each ingredient is called, you’d have to be a master chemist to understand how they all work together.
What happens when the trace amounts of dangerous product ingredients build up in your system over time?
At first, your body’s organs (kidneys, liver, etc.) slowly flush these ingredients out of your body. However, many toxins accumulate over time and can build faster than your body can clear them out.
Imagine a bucket with a small crack in the bottom. You set it under a drip, and at first, the water drops slowly out. But as the drops continue, they start to build up because they can’t drip out of the bucket as quickly as they enter. Eventually, the bucket overflows, even though the water continues to drip out of the crack.
The more these toxins build up, the more of a toll they take on your health. At first, your energy level, mental focus, and short-term memory might just seem a little less sharp. Most of us blame this on age. But then you start getting sick a little more often. You have a few more aches and pains. It takes you longer to recover from illness, injury, or even a night of moderate drinking. At some point, your skin and hair might start to look less full and shiny.
A recent study by the Organic Consumers Association found that 40% of all “natural” beauty products (tested in the study) contain dangerous carcinogenic (cancer causing) ingredients. Formaldehydes, lead, aluminum, mercury and many other harmful ingredients are considered natural, but you will see them called by unrecognizable names on labels for both natural and other products.
Many natural and organic products make claims about anti-aging, acne treatment, brightening, moisturizing, and other benefits, but don’t produce the results the product claims. If you’ve tried these products yourself (or know someone who has), you know how often they fail to live up to their promises.
So, why can’t you just bite the bullet and spend more money on expensive beauty products?
The FDA conducted a survey of heavy metals in cosmetics, and found that arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, mercury, and nickel were present in unsafe amounts in both luxury and budget brands. Even worse, because higher priced products tend to have a longer ingredient list, there’s a greater chance for toxic ingredient contamination. And again, without proper ingredient analysis you would never know you’re using products that include these harmful ingredients.
Like most complex problems, this one can’t be solved by throwing money at it. On top of this, most people are too busy to make a part time job out of investigating the thousands of tricky ingredient names, and the impossibly complicated task of understanding how all these ingredients interact with one another.
If only you could be armed with the ingredient information you need, and also have a team of licensed skin estheticians, licensed hair cosmetologists, and Board-Certified Dermatologists ready to guide you through building and maintaining the safest and most effective routine. Saving money doesn’t make much sense if you burn up hours of time and your energy looking for the best deals. Especially if you end up over paying or have to settle for a brand you didn’t want. Yet, this is a common struggle for people who want the lowest prices on their favorite beauty products.
Most of us would love to have one website where we can find our brands and products (in stock), at consistently low prices. Instead, we have hundreds of websites competing for our business, and whose prices, product availability, and even refund and shopping policies seem to change on a whim.
Why can’t life be simpler when shopping for good beauty products? Would you like to stop worrying about whether you’re getting a fair price?
I recently asked the experts at Achieve Beauty, a customer-focused beauty care consulting company, to explain why this process seems so complicated, and whether there was an easier way to save money. Their answers cleared up a lot of confusion.
Did you know that lipstick only costs between $2.00 and $3.00 to make? Shockingly, this cost applies even to some of the luxury brands that cost you up to $50, or more. There are also many skin care and hair care products that sell for hundreds of dollars that take just dollars to produce. So, what are you really buying when you spend so much money on those cosmetics, skin care and hair care products that sell at 200% to 500% markups, or more?
Can’t some brave online retailer just break the mold like Walmart did with Sam’s club back in the 80s, when they started selling house hold products at wholesale prices? While this seems like an obvious solution, the truth is a little more complicated.
The first reason prices are so high is a dismal lack of transparency. Everything in the beauty industry—from manufacturing, to packaging, to marketing, to distribution—is heavily outsourced and geographically decentralized. Because of this, even supervisors and department heads only have a keyhole-sized perspective on all the costs wrapped up in bringing a beauty product to market.
Manufacturing partners are forced to sign non-disclosure agreements. Company owners and CEOs are also held to secrecy in the interest of protecting their trade secrets from competitors. But that’s not all.
The law also allows beauty care product manufacturers to set a suggested retail price for its products and not sell its products to any stores or online sites that sell them for less. To get compliance, manufacturers often help pay for the seller’s advertising, or even pay for fixtures in the seller’s retail store.
How is this legal? Because, technically speaking, no one is being “forced” to sell at the manufacturer’s prices. Instead, the product manufacturers “suggest” a retail price, and then give extra incentives to retailers who sell at that price while charging penalties to those who sell the product at a lower price.
This is similar to the pricing policies used in the car industry, and while some people still pay full price for a car, many buyers have learned how to acquire a new car at well below the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Similarly, buying at a 20% to 50% lower price, even for the most popular brands, is now possible for your cosmetics, skin care and hair care products.
Websites that sell beauty products know you’re looking for the best prices. That’s why they have several dirty tricks up their sleeve to fool you into believing you’ve just found the perfect place to buy beauty products. For example, ever noticed how some websites advertise your favorite beauty product at an outrageously low price, but they ALWAYS seem to be out of stock?
Sometimes you even see a low price advertised on an online shopping service and when you click the ad for that product you’re taken to a totally different product. That wasn’t a computer error, it was outright trickery.
Other gimmicks involve charging more money for shipping (at the checkout, when they know that you’re less likely to cancel your order), offering one time savings to new customers only, then over charging on reorders, or (even worse), selling you expired or outdated product versions and burying this fact in tiny font on their impossible-to-find terms of service page.
Websites that sell beauty products use these tricks to get you to buy from them once. Next thing you know, you’re either paying their regular prices or you’re back to your time-consuming hunt for that unicorn of a website that sells all its beauty products at below market prices. If you’re wondering why you haven’t found this website yet, you’re not alone.
The good news is one company is finally giving you a way out of this endless hunt for the perfect deal and is bringing a fresh new dimension of transparency and personalization to the beauty industry.
Achieve Beauty is a beauty customer focused company dedicated to getting you the best prices on the products that are right for your skin and hair type, and challenges. Better, yet, they’ve brought the power of affordable personalized beauty advice to the online world.
As you know, most beauty consulting companies (and online influencers) only promote products that they get paid commissions or endorsement fees to promote. But what if the product they’re “recommending” isn’t right for your skin or hair type? What if it’s ingredients cause problems with other ingredients in your beauty routine?
What about those websites that offer low prices, but their products are either expired, or inauthentic?
Achieve Beauty does not sell products or earn commissions for “pushing” certain brands. They work for you by saving you time and money in your search for your favorite beauty products. But that’s not all. In fact, if a seller or manufacturer offers them a commission to recommend their site or product Achieve Beauty pays 100% of any commission to you.
